"My Grief as a Hard-boiled Egg” by Mel Sherrer
My Grief as a Hard-Boiled Egg
When I was a child,
I wanted to eat hard-boiled eggs whole,
like a snake,
just take them in one swallow and let them
sit in my belly, still smooth
making me full and heavy.
My mother told me — if you try that,
you will choke and die.
