“My Dog's Brain Is Bigger than Mine” by Lexi Shapiro

My Dog’s Brain Is Bigger than Mine

I had to hide my clothing.
My shoes, the flower bed outside of my house,
the ocean and the dolphin swimming in it.
I had to hide the kids in the classroom with plank boards, the last cookie in the cookie jar,
my dog, my diary. I had to hide the sun from the sky and the moon from my eyes. I had to hide my friends in a warm hug and my hair in a hat filled with quicksand.
I had to hide the TV remote under the rug under the couch under the roof of my house just to
see my mother’s face when she couldn’t find it, and when she couldn’t, I had to hide my smile.
