“Glory-of-the-Snow” by Len Krisak

Glory-of-the-Snow
(Chionodoxa luciliae)

And still white patches show
Out on the late March lawn,
With winter not yet gone.
(It chooses not to go
Or let the flowers grow.)
But through the shallow white
That's settled on brown blades
Comes glory-of-the-snow
In sparse uprisings — raids
Where it fights for the light.
Six-petalled stars of blue,
Though yellow at their core,
Have bravely broken through.
Come April, there'll be more.
